The Observatory on the Stevenson's Trail are settle down to get informations about the hikers, to value the impact of this activity on the territory and to contribute at the "substainable management" of the trail.

Long distance hiking is a popular tourist activity but one which is studied very little, both from quantitative and qualitative points of view.

Within the framework of its development strategy, the Association wished to establish a study to produce precise statistical data relative to selected observation criteria.

  Observatory of the environment
  From 2013, the environmental observatory is mostly use to get information about the news on the trail (pollution points, signposting, deterioration, works...). Those information provided are useful to participate in the protection of natural heritage and in the same time to improve the conditions of your hiking. The Association transmits those information to the people on each territory which can repare, improve or change locally the problem.
   
  Green Trek
 

Picking up litter along the Trail is a great way of helping in preserving the beautiful scenary! You can participate by equiping yourself with an eco-bag available for free from the Association's members (accomodation, donkey hire,...). More information in french here: www.greentrek.fr

Further to the 2010 study, a lighter protocol was implemented for the 2011 season in order to continue collection of information relative to the use of the trail.

With regards to user profiles, the 2010 figures which can be seen in the summary report were confirmed in the 2011 analyses.
Volume of use is currently stable, with an estimated 6 180 hikers in 2011.

It commissioned Traces TPI, a consultancy specialised in outdoor activities, to carry out the survey over the 2010 season (April to October).

Study's aim : 

- knowing the profil of the hikers and their behaviour in term of consumption,
- value of the economical impact of this activity on the territories
- value of what it needed and loved by the hikers about the trail ...

Protocol 2010 :

- Questionnaire in face to face (56 days of work)
- Questionnaire with economical information (1240 people concerned)
- 17 point of counting the hikers
- 5 ecocounters along the trail

Rate of frequentation 2010 : 6142 hikers

  • 2003: 1st economic impact study for the Stevenson trail

For its tenth anniversary, the Association ‘Sur le Chemin de R.L. Stevenson’ wanted to publish a report on its activities. An economic impact study was carried out in 2003 amongst the 54 tourism professionals who were members of the Association..

The key figures from this study:

- 15 000 nights accommodation, 13 000 meals, 1 000 days of donkey hire...
- 25% of members’ turnover is directly related to the Stevenson trail
- 550 000€ direct income
- 25 jobs directly related to the Stevenson trail
